An IT Manager In The UK

Hi, I’m Jack and I am an IT Manager in the UK at Prime ICT with around 7 years of experience in the field, from the age of 16.

The aim of this site is to provide people with an insight into what it’s like as an IT engineer as well as somewhere to share useful tips and tricks for budding IT engineers and those well established in the field.

My experience lies in business IT systems from servers, laptops & desktops, right through to networking & infrastructure.

I am currently dedicating a lot of my time to learning more about network security including best practices and also cloud technologies, in greater depth.

A Trip Down Memory Lane...

My career in IT started in September 2016 when I took on the role of Junior IT Support Apprentice at a managed service provider in Birmingham. I was fresh out of school, having only finished my GCSE’s 2 months prior, knowing that I didn’t want to go to college or university but also knowing that I loved computers and found them fascinating. I stumbled upon my apprenticeship by chance so I took it, gave it my all and it really did pay off.

My time as an apprentice was a great experience. Not only for breaking into the IT field but also for starting me off in work life.

I learnt lots about customer relationships, call and ticket handling, working as a team and mainly, lots about supporting desktops, laptops & servers.

I even went as far as designing and implementing a deployment system to reduce the new equipment setup burden from myself and in turn allow other members of the team to build equipment consistently with my methods during my absence which proved to save a lot of time and hassle for me and the team.

Once my apprenticeship was completed I moved around jobs for a few years, working in the finance sector, retail sector, agricultural sector and also working for managed service providers supporting companies in the medical sector, motor trade, legal sector and much more.

This allowed me to gain more experience by using a larger array of systems and whilst it is frowned upon by some employers to move jobs so often, I think it has helped shape me into who I am today with the knowledge I have and the drive to learn more. It also lead me to places that I probably would never have spent time in willingly but turned out to be great places and experiences.

I also relocated entirely to Shropshire to live with my, now, fiancé and experience what life is like in the “country” compared to the hustle and bustle of life in Birmingham.

And Now...

I’m older, wiser & going more loopy by the day but I’m also loving IT more than ever with the challenges it brings and the tests it throws onto me.

It’s an ever changing career with so much room for advancement and progression and I’m thankful for how far I’ve come to all those who’ve supported me along the way.

I am now working as an IT Services Manager/Technical Director at Prime ICT, leading the team and getting the business off the ground, you can check out our website here.
